The Anatomy of the Book of Esther

The Complete Hebrew Text, English Translation & Commentary

Based on Persian, Greek & Jewish Archaeological, Historical, Midrashic and Scriptural Sources

  • Is the Book of Esther fact or fiction?
  • Who was the author and when did he or she live?
  • Where and when did these events take place?
  • What was the historical context for the story and who were its protagonists?
  • Why were the events of the Book of Esther instrumental in the survival of monotheism?

Many see the Megillah as a contrived tale -- little more than an engaging fiction serving as the rationale for an enduring, light-hearted celebration. But if religious faith and practice can be based on a complete fiction, then what does that say about the underlying value of that faith? If one credits faith for survival, then the events that led to the perpetuation and institutionalization of that faith ought to be verifiable -- at the very least, circumstantially.

An historical scenario is assembled within which the events of the Megillah fit comfortably. The behavior of the principals is rational and their motivations clear. The history is supported by archaeological finds as well as by citations in contemporaneous or later literary and religious works. In sum, while the author may have shaped the story to enhance its impact, the argument for historical accuracy is strong. And with this evidentiary support, our story assumes its rightful place in the ancient faith narrative.
